Spoiler alert! Cozumel is one of the safest tropical destinations you can visit.

No matter where you vacation, you want to stay safe. It’s important to read up on where you’re going, because any place you vacation will have its specific warnings about how to stay safe.

Though it’s parts of Mexico, Cozumel is very unique. It’s far from the mainland and not typically a target of organized crime or drug running. Mexico is proud of Cozumel and its reputation among tourists, so they do a pretty darn good job of keeping crime low. Here are a few specifics.

Crime: The fact is, crime is pretty low here in Cozumel. Violent crime is very unlikely, and pickpocketing / purse snatching seem to be the bulk of the problem. When in San Miguel, just keep your wits about you as you would in any large city.

Alcohol: When people are on vacation, they’re more likely to drink. We understand that, but there’s something you need to know. Remember that the safety infrastructure and codes are different from those in the United States. So if you wander drunk onto a pier, it might not have the safety railings that have saved you when you’ve been drinking at Coney Island. Wandering on the beach in the middle of the night can also open you up to the crimes mentioned above.

Water: As advanced as Cozumel is in nearly every aspect, the tap water is still not safe to drink. Drink bottled water, and brush your teeth with it as well.

The fact is, vacationing in Cozumel is one of the safest Caribbean vacations you can take, and considerably safer than visiting many American cities. It’s even safer at Residencias Reef, which has a guard and gated access. So come stay at our Cozumel vacation rentals and have a great time!
